‘Disgusting’ letter left in Coomera Waters mailbox after Pride Flag flown in backyard

A Gold Coast lawyer has been left “shocked and disgusted” after a letter from “cowardly, homophobic and gutless neighbour” was slipped in their letter box. Here’s what happened.

A Gold Coast lawyer has been left “shocked and disgusted” after a letter from “cowardly, homophobic and gutless neighbour” was slipped in their letter box.

Summer Irvin discovered the letter this week after they had been flying the rainbow flag at their Coomera Waters home in support of the World Pride festival.

The anonymous letter refers to the LGBTQI+ flag as a “rainbow cloth”.

“Our community in Coomera Waters is a wholesome community and not a queer community and nor does it promote queer conduct – especially in children,” the letter read.

The letter goes on to ask Ms Irvin to take the flag down.

“Please be aware that my friend and me (with children) often walk along the Coomera River area that borders your property and hope that I/we do not have to be exposed to that which we find offensive, unsavoury, abhorrent, corrupting, divisive, outrageous and disgusting,” the letter said.

The letter also urges her to fly the national flag.

“Further, by displaying the said cloth you give the impression that we at Coomera Waters are accepting for such above mentioned behaviour,” the letter said.

“I assure you were are NOT and nor do we want anyone to give that false impression, which you are doing.”

Ms Irvin, who is the sister of Married At First Sight star, Ashley Irvin, took to social media in shock after getting the letter.

“I am so enraged and I am so sorry the LGBTQ+ have to experience this type of hatred,” Summer said wrote.

Speaking to the Bulletin, Ms Irvin, who moved to the area from Sydney recently, was shocked that people in her community held those views.

She said she had previously flown flags for holidays such as a Christmas flag and had received no complaints.

She said the flag had been flown for World Pride celebrations and in support of the LGBTQI+ community.

“That pride flag is never coming down now,” she said.

“I am going to get a bigger one.”

Ms Irvin said she was also planning a pride barbecue in her front yard and inviting all her neighbours.

She said she did not expect to see such views in the Coomera Waters community.

Ashley Irvin – who was in season five of MAFS – also took to social media about the flag.

“There is no room for hate, but damn this letter has me riled up,” she wrote.

“Wtf is wrong with people!

“Comparing LGBTQIA+ to paedophiles and murderers – I am absolutely FUMING!”

A large number of her commenters were in support of the Irvin’s, slamming the letter as “scary”.

“OMG a ‘Wholesome Community’ (sic) What that suggests is scary in itself!,” one commenter wrote.

“Walk a different way!

“This letter is everything that is wrong with our world today.”

Another commenter said: “Will absolutely contribute for a larger flag.”

Not everyone was entirely supportive.

One commenter wrote: “Although I disagree with some parts of that letter and the fact it was left anonymously, I also respect their right to have an opinion.

“I am somewhere in the middle. I have no issue with the LGB part and have family and friends in that community, but that’s where it stops for me.

“No hate intended or expected by being honest.”
