THE Gold Coast's newest school under construction has been officially named, with Coomera State Special School chosen by the state government.
The school, set to open in January 2022, is one of three under construction across the state, with one at Caloundra and Greenbank.
Education Minister Grace Grace said the three 2022 foundation principals were now able to develop a logo and uniform and to accept enrolments.
“Hundreds of students have expressed their interest in enrolling which is a really positive sign that local families are keen to send their children to these new schools,” she said.
“The $50.6 million Coomera school will open to Prep-Year 12 students, and the $74.8 million Caloundra school and the $73 million Greenbank school will open to Prep – Year 6 students.
“Tradies are getting on with the job of building these schools which will feature world-class facilities. I know that the local members are just as excited as the students for their new school to open.”
Coomera State Special School Foundation Principal Kate Hucker said she was looking forward to moving ahead with planning.
‘We’ve had lots of interest from prospective families and the local community on the name, and we’ll be working with them to finalise the school uniform and logo in the coming weeks,” Ms Hucker said.
Construction begins on Gold Coast's newest school
June 25
CONSTRUCTION has begun on a multimillion-dollar special school for the northern Gold Coast.
The $42.7m Coomera Special School on Foxwell Road was announced in the lead up to the 2020 state election, and is set to be completed by 2022.
The project includes multi-storey junior and senior learning buildings, an administration block, a resource centre, multipurpose hall, hospitality and central amenities.
It is understood the school will provide relief to the Gold Coast’s two existing special schools in Southport and Currumbin, as well as a special school in Beenleigh.
The school was part of a $171m education investment for the Gold Coast in the 2021-22 state budget.
Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon said the build was a response to a surge in population on the city’s northern end.
“This is fuelling growth on the Gold Coast, and this massive investment is meeting the demand for families seeking to educate their kids in our world-class state schools,” she said.
