Update 4pm Tuesday: An elderly couple who suffered serious injuries after being mowed down by a car on the Gold Coast were in a stable condition in hospital on Tuesday.

The man and woman in their mid-70s were both rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital on Monday afternoon in a serious but stable condition with significant leg injuries.

A GCUH spokeswoman said their condition had since improved.

Police believe an 80-year-old female driver pressed the wrong pedal when parking near Charis Seafood on Marine Pde, in Labrador about 3.20pm.

The Mercedes then jumped the kerb and collided with the elderly couple who were on the footpath.

The car stopped when it hit a parking sign.

A police spokeswoman said they were continuing their investigation and no charges had been laid as of Tuesday afternoon.

Update 5pm Monday: A Mercedes has been driven up a kerb and hit two elderly pedestrians just meters from a popular children’s playground in the central Gold Coast.

The man and woman in their mid-70s were both rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition with significant leg injuries.

Two other elderly people - who were reportedly in the car during the crash - were taken to GCUH as a precaution.

The Mercedes then jumped the kerb and collided with the elderly couple who were on the footpath.

The car stopped when it hit a parking sign.

It was less than 10m away from a children’s playground which was packed with families for the long weekend.

It was also close to a large family who were enjoying the last day of the school holidays at a group of covered picnic tables.

One witness told the Bulletin they had seen the crash and ran to help.

They said the leg injuries appeared to be quite extensive.

“It was a bit of a shock to everyone,” she said.

Another witness said it was lucky that children had not been hurt.

They both said it looked as if the crash had been a complete accident.

Off-duty nurse Amy Hall said she was buying some fish and chip shop when her daughters ran inside and told her there had been a crash.

She ran to assist.

“I took blood pressure – I haven’t done a manual blood pressure for a while,” she said.

“It was tragic.”

She said she also helped keep one of the pair calm.

“The lady was very close to the wheel of the car, I think they were really lucky,” she said.

“It’s scary because it’s a family park. It is scary.”

Gold Coast police Acting Inspector Bradley Rix said it “appeared at this stage” the woman had hit the accelerator instead of the brake as she parked.

“Speaking to witnesses and the driver itself it appears as though the wrong pedal has been pressed,” he said.

Acting Insp Rix said police would continue to investigate.

He said the park was very busy.

“It’s terrible that two people were struck, but certainly with the amount of people who are here, it could have been a lot worse,” he said.
