Gold Coast City Council has issued a warning to residents and visitors after ongoing rough surf conditions force beaches to close for the fifth day in a row.

All Gold Coast beaches will remain closed on Wednesday due to a hazardous surf warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.

The warning - which would remain in place until midnight on Wednesday - said “surf and swell conditions were expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming”.

Surf Life Saving Queensland advice people should stay out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.

“Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf,” the statement said.

“Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.

“Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.

“Boaters should remember to log on with their local radio base and consider their safety management plan.”

It comes after Council closed a number of beaches over the weekend citing similar poor conditions.

SUNDAY MARCH 10: Multiple Gold Coast beaches closed due ‘dangerous’ surf conditions

A number of Gold Coast beaches have been closed due to dangerous conditions.

Gold Coast City Council has issued a warning for beachgoers that a number of beaches across the city have been closed due to large swells, strong onshore winds and big tides.

Lifeguards are assessing beaches on an individual basis as conditions change.

A Surf Life Saving Qld spokesman said at around 7am on Saturday, the Gold Coast recorded a high tide of 1.8 metres in some areas including beaches along North Tallebudgera, and is expected to run out to a zero-metre low-tide later this afternoon.

“That’s a lot of water to run out. We’re about in the middle of that tide running out at the moment,” he said.

“We’ve closed a number of beaches due to very windy conditions and dangerous surf conditions. That wind is picking of the swell and making it worse. We’re seeing swells of around 2 metres at seven-second intervals.”

Gold Coasters and visitors have been urged to only swim between the yellow and red flags and to follow lifeguard instructions carefully.

As of 11.00am the following beaches remain closed:

• SeaWorld at Tower 42

• Breaker St at Tower 39

• Elkhorn Ave at Tower 35

• Clifford St at Tower 33

• Wharf Rd at Tower 31

• Australia Ave at Tower 29
