A drugs lab has been found hidden in a suburban Gold Coast home after a raid by Australian Border Force officers took an unexpected turn.

The officers, who were supported by Queensland Police, discovered the lab when they arrived at the property on Cann Close in Pacific Pines for a planned operation at about 7am on Friday.

Fire service and ambulance personnel were immediately called to the property when the clandestine lab was discovered.

Police sources said the lab was “sophisticated” and firies and ambos had been called as a precautionary measure due to the nature of chemicals involved.

Among the specialist Specialist Queensland Fire and Emergency Service equipment brought to the scene was a breathing apparatus and hazardous materials response unit.

“Around 7am police and Australian Border Force officers conducted a joint operation,” a Queensland Police spokesperson said.

“Upon arrival authorities were advised there were dangerous chemicals present.

“The Queensland Fire Service and Queensland Ambulance Service were called.

“They have since declared the scene as safe to enter.

“On examination of the scene officers have located what is suspected to be a drug production lab.

“A crime scene was subsequently declared to allow for more detailed examination.

“Investigations are continuing”.

One person, a 43-year-old Pacific Pines man, was taken into custody by police at the scene.

Police remained at the scene throughout the day on Friday, with officers wearing rubber gloves seen carrying bags from the property.

Neighbours told the Bulletin it was the second major incident on the otherwise quiet street after a fire at a house there a number of years ago allegedly caused by a drugs lab.

It is not known if Friday morning’s raids were at the same house.

The ABF told the Bulletin it was unable to comment while the operation was ongoing.

“The Australian Border Force (ABF) can confirm officers visited a place of residence in the Gold Coast region today,” a spokesperson said.

“As the matter relates to an ongoing investigation, it would not be appropriate to comment further.”
