Don't miss out on the headlines from Gold Coast. Followed categories will be added to My News.
He may be a Kiwi but Supercars young gun Matt Payne is revved up to debut on his “home track”.
Relocating to the Gold Coast from New Zealand in 2021, Payne said he’s been watching races on the Surfers circuit for years.
Excited to take to the GC500 course in just nine days time, the 21-year-old said he couldn’t wait.
“To finally drive around the Gold Coast circuit will be pretty special,” he said.
“And now that I live just 20 minutes from the track it’ll be even more special. It’s definitely one of the challenging tracks of the category and I can’t wait to hit it.”
Fellow driver Jack Le Brocq agreed that excitement for the Gold Coast round of the Supercars was building off the back of the Bathurst race.
He admits the GC500 is one of his favourite events on the racing calendar.
“Gold Coast is a different aspect (of racing),” he said.
“It’s an awesome circuit with curbs, walls – it’s always tight and hard to pass so requires a lot of strategy.
“The way the cars are set up is totally different to Bathurst, you change the way you drive – fingers crossed we roll over the track fast and have a great event.”
The drivers took a chance to check out the Hopo ferry service yesterday, one of the great transport options for fans at this year’s GC500.
Ticket holders for the race who purchase a single-day Hopo ferry pass will receive free travel on the other event days.
Guests are invited to show their Hopo pass with their GC500 pass to receive further free Hopo travel over the course of the event.
Ferries are fully accessible with stops at Surfers Paradise, HOTA, Marina Mirage, Broadwater Parklands and SeaWorld.
Tickets to the Boost Mobile GC500 are available at supercars.com and Ticketek.
