Police have shed light on the mystery surrounding a body found on the Pacific Motorway on early Monday, saying the man was the victim of a horror motorbike crash.

A crime scene was established after the man’s body was found on the southbound M1 lanes near Tweed Valley Way at Chinderah at 5.20am on Monday morning.

Police combed the nearby area and found a crashed motorcycle on the Tweed Valley Way overpass, with initial investigations suggesting the rider was ejected from the overpass onto the motorway below.

Police could not confirm whether the man had been struck by a vehicle once he hit the roadway.

The man is yet to be formally identified by Tweed/Byron District Police.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The crime scene caused seven hours of delays for motorists, with traffic banked up for several kilometres on the Pacific Motorway.

Traffic diversions were put in place after the grisly find, with light weight vehicles diverted via Tweed Coast Rd and Clothiers Creek Rd – while heavy vehicles like freight trucks were parked.

Southbound lanes reopened and normal traffic conditions resumed at 12.45pm.

Anyone with dashcam footage who may have been travelling along the M1 in the moments before the rider was located is urged to contact Tweed Heads Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
