The tragic circumstances behind a young father’s death in a horrific car crash in Brisbane’s south has been revealed as family and friends pay emotional tributes to the man who was “dedicated to turn his life around”.
Wynnum’s Charles Bishop, known as CJ to most, was killed after being a passenger in a car which struck a pole on Grieve Rd, near Rochedale Rd, at Rochedale on the morning of July 3.
The 19-year-old died at the scene while the 33-year-old man was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with life-threatening injuries and is now in a critical but stable condition.
Mr Bishop was the father of a one-year-old daughter and would have celebrated his 20th birthday on Saturday (July 6).
His ex-partner and mother of his child, Chantelle Mantten, gave a special tribute to him in the days after the crash, saying her daughter would be shown “every single photo of you”.
“And told about how amazing you were and how much you loved her and you wanted to get your life on track for her,” she posted on Facebook.
“You were such a good person and you deserve so much more.
“You were always so happy and I’ve got so many stories to tell (your daughter) when she is old about you.
“You’ve always worked hard and had a smile on your face. Always was willing to help everyone out even when (you) had nothing.
“You’ll be dearly missed Charles.”
One of Mr Bishop’s best friends, Kiara Warner, who with many others left flowers and a tribute at the site of the crash said he was one of the most loving and kindest young men she has ever known.
“What has happened has deeply affected everyone including his one-year-old daughter,” she said.
“He passed away three days before his 20th birthday. I received my final message from him at 9.43am, just minutes before the crash.
“He was so dedicated to turning his life around and protecting the people who he cared about most. He would always put everyone before himself.”
Miss Warner said the tragedy had changed the lives of everyone who knew him.
“He was so very happy all the time, not a day went past where he wasn’t smiling and trying to better everyone else’s day,” she said.
“I am still trying to comprehend the fact my best friend is no longer here with us
“He will forever be loved and missed.”
Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with relevant vision of the vehicle before the crash to come forward.
Investigations are continuing.
