A drink-driving Logan concreter, who crashed his car while over four times the limit, developed a ‘significant problem’ with booze after a tragedy in his life.

Bethania father of two Waylon William Wood, 25, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Tuesday to nine charges, including driving under the influence of liquor, committing a public nuisance and stealing.

The court heard Wood crashed his car into a ditch in Buccan and recorded a 0.209 blood alcohol reading on August 7 last year.

Further police checks also revealed that Wood was driving unlicensed and his car was unregistered, uninsured and had a registration plate that didn’t belong to it.

The court heard Wood also pleaded guilty to public nuisance after he got into an argument with someone while intoxicated at a football club on September 18 last year.

He was also charged for accessing a former associate’s online banking account and stealing $446 by way of transfers on October 28.

Wood’s lawyer told the court he took the money from his ex-girlfriend’s account during a break-up after she refused to pay him back for a flight to New Zealand.

In relation to the other offences, he said alcohol had been a “significant problem” in Wood’s life.

“That revolves around circumstances when he was 19. He had a set of twins who died when they were only two weeks old,” he said.

“That’s when everything began to spiral (for) him. He began drinking more heavily.”

Magistrate Clare Kelly said Wood had a limited criminal history, but he clearly needed to undergo alcohol counselling.

He was fined $1800 and disqualified from driving for eight months. He was also ordered to pay $446 in restitution to the victim.

No convictions were recorded for the offences of committing a public nuisance, breaching bail, stealing or using a restricted computer without consent.
