More videos have surfaced exposing a rising ‘fight club’ and ‘teacher bashing’ culture at a school in Logan, as a child psychologist shedding some light on what might be going on.

“At least five children in Year 9 have been expelled and at least one teacher physically and verbally assaulted,” a parent told Quest News regarding the brawl.

Police have confirmed they would continue patrolling near the school while fights like this continued to break out.

It is understood that Logan police are also investigating an incident at the school reported to them on May 25, 2022.

A fight allegedly took place between two 16-year-old boys in a classroom at the school.

Police said no charges had been laid.

A parent from Flagstone State Community College said she felt safer knowing police had resumed patrols at the school during pick-up and drop-off.

“Parents have not been contacted by the school since the fight (on Wednesday),” she said.

“I emailed her (the principal) yesterday though with my thoughts … have not heard back.

“I’m pretty annoyed, really it’s a joke that we aren’t informed about all the issues. How do they expect to fix it if they can’t inform everyone of the problems?”

The comments follow parents speaking out about concerns for their children’s safety, with a social media account documenting the rising ‘fight club’ trend at the school.

According to QUT Professor Marilyn Campbell, a child psychologist and researcher, students fighting each other is not a new concept.

“There’s just something about human nature that likes watching people fight … look at the boxing industry,” Professor Campbell said.

“What we are actually seeing is an increase in abusive and violent behaviour from parents to schools. What happens in society is reflected in schools and kids model themselves on adults.”

Professor Campbell said trends in children’s behaviour is really just a reflection of societal beliefs.

“It’s a part of our culture. We like watching people fight and always have … I mean we’re always at war aren’t we?” she explained.

“Your worldview as a child is made up firmly of family, school, friends and media.

“It’s about reducing this behaviour in schools. You’re not going to eliminate it … it’s a part of being human and happens in all societies.”

Other reasons why it seems ‘fight club culture’ and ‘teacher bashing’ are on the rise is because of how society views teachers, Professor Campbell said.

“I do think though that violence and disrespect towards teachers is increasing … from both parents and students,” she said.

“Students using abusive language and physically hitting teachers every week … this is something that 20 years ago was not prevalent.

“We’ve always had fighting and bullying but there used to be more respect for teachers.

“But teachers are no longer appreciated in our society and have relatively low wages. If our society is not respecting our teachers then the kids learn that this is okay to disrespect teachers too.”

Professor Campbell said she also believed discussing domestic violence in such an open way could be leading to more violent behaviour from children.

“Lots of kids are brought up in families where there is domestic violence and we know how widespread it is. It’s always been there but it’s not something we’ve always talked about, that’s changed,” she said.

“As we become more open with talking about what used to be taboo, it’s influencing kids to learn a new normal.

“Talking about these things might have adverse harmful consequences.”

The department of education has been contacted for comment.

Previously an Education Queensland spokesperson said they could not confirm whether any students had been expelled, due to privacy reasons, however said no teachers were harmed as a result of the school pick-up incident.

“Violence and anti-social behaviours are not tolerated in Queensland state schools and any situation that threatens the safety and wellbeing of students, staff or others in our school communities is treated extremely seriously, and dealt with as a matter of priority,” they said.
