A Logan man’s Facebook Marketplace scam has been revealed in court, where he pocketed more than $10,000 and never delivered the items promised.

Nathan Keith Batchelor, 20, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on July 12 to possessing drug utensils, assault with intent to steal, two counts of enter dwelling and 18 counts of fraud.

The court heard that between September, 2022 and October, 2023, Batchelor defrauded Facebook users of $11,000 using Facebook Marketplace.

The court heard that the Redland Bay man, who formerly lived in Dalby and now resided in Logan, had experimented with methamphetamine as a teen but was currently abstinent from the drug.

Defence lawyer Layla King said Batchelor was a proud Indigenous man who embraced his culture.

“He is connected with his culture and danced and performed during NAIDOC celebrations,” she said.

“He is a young man and there hasn’t been any offending since November, 2023.

“In terms of restitution, he has instructed me he would pay back every dollar that he has taken and was extremely remorseful for his behaviour.”

Police prosecution told the court that a period of probation would be recommended as it would allow Batchelor a chance at rehabilitation.

“The defendant has received terms of probation before but he was compliant with his order so is suitable again,” said Sergeant Stephen Cochrane.

The court heard Batchelor had completed a 21-week training course with the Salvation Army and had eight siblings.

He previously worked with LJ Hooker and had a role working in boat maintenance.

Magistrate Patrina Clohessy said she accepted his genuine remorse but a period of imprisonment was still necessary.

“I note you’re willing to pay compensation but are without immediate financial means,” she said.

“This conduct however, needs to be deterred.”

Batchelor was sentenced to 12 months prison, suspended for 18 months and placed on a probation order for 18 months

He was also ordered to pay $5,500 in restitution to the victims.
