A mother has called for an investigation into a southside hospital after her critically-ill baby daughter waited nearly seven hours to see a doctor before being rushed into the Children’s Hospital for a lifesaving emergency operation.

Madison Logan has warned parents not to take their children to Logan Hospital after her baby daughter, Mia, nearly died of a serious condition of the intestines while waiting for treatment in the hospital in June.

It is the same hospital where a month before, five-year-old Hiyaan Kapil died hours after being discharged while suffering stomach and leg pains in May.

Ms Logan said she had just moved to Greenbank in Logan from Sydney and had no knowledge of the hospital or the fatal incident a month prior.

She rushed Mia there after her nine-month-old started losing consciousness, was vomiting up bile, and was in pain.

The pair, and Madi’s mother Suzi Scott, arrived just after 6pm on Wednesday, June 22, and were in the emergency department for three hours before baby Mia had blood in her nappy.

Hospital staff told the anxious new mum to “calm down” and wait her turn, despite the baby vomiting all over her change of clothes, on the waiting room chairs and the floor.

“We went through every change of clothes I brought with me and I ended up having to wrap Mia in my jacket as I had nothing else clean for her,” Ms Logan said.

“I took Mia to be changed in the bathroom and that’s when I noticed blood in her stool.

Visibly distraught, she returned to the front desk only to be told the blood was “completely normal” to “calm down” and “take a seat”.

Over the next three hours, Mia’s condition worsened even though Ms Logan asked to be seen urgently.

Logan resident Danielle Payne was also in the emergency department that night and said it took doctors 11 hours to see her four-year-old nephew who had split his head open.

“I remember (Ms Logan) and her baby and I wanted to cry with how they were treating her,” Ms Payne said.

After midnight a doctor assessed Mia and said she had gastroenteritis before they were moved to a short-term children’s waiting room where the young mum asked a nurse if they could get a second opinion.

It was not until a second doctor came in, during the early hours of the morning, and ordered an ultrasound that Mia was finally diagnosed with intussusception, a serious intestinal condition, needing emergency surgery.

But the family was held at Logan Hospital for a further four hours until they were taken by ambulance at 9am to the Queensland Children’s Hospital at South Brisbane.

That day, Mia had two procedures before finally having surgery to remove part of her intestine later that night.

She remained in the Children’s Hospital for a further five days and has since recovered.

Now Ms Logan has called for an inquiry and investigation into the incident and has warned other parents of the ordeal.

“I am forever scarred from that night and seeing my daughter so sick with delayed care,” Ms Logan said.

“I would never return to Logan hospital for anything ever, especially with my children and I have absolutely nothing positive to say about the hospital.

“I would like the doctor who first assessed Mia to be investigated along with the man who was at the emergency desk that night.”

A Metro South Health spokesperson said the hospital was unable to comment on individual cases but always strived to provide the best care for all patients.

“It is a priority at Logan Hospital to always provide the highest quality emergency care to all patients including the almost 30,000 children who presented to the Emergency Department last financial year,” the spokesperson said

“Logan Hospital works closely with the Queensland Children’s Hospital where higher levels of care are indicated.

“We welcome feedback and concerns being raised, and are always happy to meet with families to discuss any issues.”
