Mirways Sayed, 46, was denied bail in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday following a physical altercation outside Academy Alive in Underwood on August 27.
He has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm while armed/in company, affray and disturbing religious worship.
The court heard CCTV footage captured Sayed getting out of a station wagon armed with a hammer alongside two co-defendants around midday on August 27.
The trio got into a physical altercation with another male complainant there known to them.
At the time of the altercation members of the Muslim community were at the Academy Alive praying when they heard a commotion outside and attempted to stop the physical altercation.
The physical altercation continued in the middle of the road at the intersection of Logan Rd and Ferguson St, causing numerous vehicles to stop, reverse away or swerve around the altercation.
Police will allege Sayed was armed with a hammer and the other male complainants in the altercation was armed with a knife.
The court heard the complainant ran to the Academy Alive in an attempt to seek refuge and Sayed allegedly threw a brick at him but it missed and hit an innocent bystander in the face.
The victim fell to the ground on impact and was transported to the hospital with swelling and bruising.
All the defendants continued to yell at the man once he was inside the building, encouraging the fight to continue by saying words to the effect of, “Come outside you c***” and “Stab me you dog!”
During the altercation, numerous small children were present and clearly distressed by the incident.
At about 1pm the three co-defendants were calmed by the Imam and left the scene.
Sayed’s lawyer told the court there was no suggestion that he had struck the complainant with the hammer but did swing it in “self-defence”.
He said Sayed was born in Afghanistan and came to Australia with his family in 1985 and has resided in Brisbane since then.
His matters were adjourned to October 15.
