A father and son have been charged over an alleged gang-related shooting of a teenager south of Brisbane, however the gunman remains at large.
Mirways Sayed, 46, his son Jalaallo Deen Sayed, 20, both of Runcorn, and Palu Letoa, 22, of Upper Caboolture, have all been charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.
The three men appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning over the alleged shooting of the boy, aged 16, in a Kuraby park in March 2019. However none of the men are alleged to be the gunman.
Police allege a group of men approached two 16-year-old boys in Svoboda Park and multiple shots were fired with a handgun. One of the boys was allegedly shot in the arm and taken to hospital.
During a bail application for Mirways, police opposed his release fearing it could spark retaliation between two gangs.
“The main concern to the prosecution is contact between the two groups, there’s the group that he (Mirways) is in and the other group is predominantly Pacific Islander ... two gangs I guess,” police prosecutor Sgt Matt Kahler said.
“There is concern of retaliatory attacks between the two.”
Police don’t allege Mirways was involved in the actual shooting or even present but rather its planning.
However his lawyer Andrew McGinness said there was no evidence of that “whatsoever”.
Mr McGinnes said police were relying on CCTV captured at 8.30pm, more than three hours before the shooting, showing two people walking towards a skatepark for an apparent meeting.
“It is alleged that at that meeting at the skate park a number of people attended, including the applicant, and a group of other persons none of them are identified,” he said.
Mr McGinnes said a vehicle is seen leaving at 10pm with unidentified people in it.
Police then allege at 12am four males entered Svoboda Park where the shooting occurred.
“They were spotted by the complainant and his group. The material states that the males in the distance, their faces were unable to be seen. At that stage at least two shots were fired,” he said.
“So there is no identification evidence whatsoever.”
During a bail application for his son Jalaallo it was alleged he was present during the incident but was not the gunman.
All three men were granted bail by Magistrate Judith Daley on the condition they do not contact the alleged victim, people who were with him in the park or their co-accused.
As the Sayeds were released from the watchhouse an agitated supporter swore at the media and attempted to the shield father and son from questions.
