Logan Hospital car park ‘sinking’, opening delayed by months

A major hospital’s new car park has reportedly been ‘sinking’ and will now open later than expected in a blow for patients south of Brisbane.

Logan Hospital’s new multistorey car park has reportedly been ‘sinking’ with the problem delaying its delivery by months.

The facility, which was supposed to help with chronic parking shortages at the growing hospital, was scheduled to have opened early next year.

However it will now be delayed several months.

Metro South Health said in a statement that the eight-storey facility needed “additional structural work’’.

Logan residents said on social media that they had heard about the issue from construction site workers months ago.

“The builder identified that there is greater than expected settlement occurring as the ground adjusts to the building’s weight and advised Metro South Health of the issue,” the MSH statement said.

“The builder is conducting additional structural work and there is no cost to Metro South Health for these works.

“A full, independent building certification process will also be undertaken prior to the building being handed over to the hospital.”

The car park will provide 1506 undercover spaces, taking the hospital’s total to more than 2000 parking spaces for patients, visitors and staff. Fees will be charged to use it.

It will be owned and operated by Logan Hospital, with fee revenue used for capital loan repayments, operations and maintenance. The hospital will not be making a profit.
