A 23-year-old Mount Warren Park bricklayer with a lengthy criminal history has landed back in court for stealing a motorbike after tricking a seller into letting him take it for a test ride.

Corey James Bridge, 23, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday to 20 charges including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence disqualified by a court order and stealing.

It comes after he was recently convicted for pulling a kitchen knife at a party and launching a horrific assault on the 58-year-old father of the host, bashing him and kicking his head on the ground “like a football” on January 27, 2017.

The bulk of the fresh offences he now faced took place between April 10 and July 14, including a “quite serious example of” unlawful use of a motor vehicle offence.

The court heard Bridge had seen the motorbike advertised for sale and he reached out, made contact and organised to meet the seller.

He asked if he could take it for a test drive and drove off with the bike and didn’t have any further contact with the seller. The bike was located later with some damage.

Bridge’s lawyer told the court he had also been the victim of a terrible assault in 2017 and he has ongoing problems stemming from that, along with suffering from anxiety.

“He began using methamphetamine when he was 18-years-old because he was involved with peers who influenced him in that way,” she said.

“In relation to the offending, my instructions are that they were predominantly drug fuelled and he would steal items to be able to purchase drugs.”

The court heard Bridge had been on a suspended sentence at the time of the offending and he had spent 84 days in pre-sentence custody which was declared time served.

He was given a head sentenced of nine months imprisonment with an immediate parole date.
