Mr Brookes, who works as a sandblaster, made an application for bail after allegedly getting involved in an altercation outside a licensed venue on Albert St, Logan Village, on April 23.

The court heard he walked up to a man on the street and allegedly punched him to the side of the head, forcing him to fall down on the footpath in an unconscious state.

The man was taken to hospital with a fractured skull and bleeding to the brain.

He’s currently in a coma in an intensive care unit.

The court heard the next day, police executed a search warrant at his home and further charged Mr Brookes with possessing dangerous drugs, producing dangerous drugs and possessing utensils or pipes for use.

Police prosecutor Tahlia Boettcher said Mr Brookes had a “propensity for violence” looking at his criminal history.

“He clearly has a drug problem looking at his history, your honour, there are several drug offences on there,” she said.

Mr Brookes’ lawyer said there had been an 11-year gap since his earlier offending.

“He and his wife have worked really hard over the last year to create a family environment that contributes to society with that full-time employment,” he said.

Magistrate Terry Duroux said Mr Brookes was still on probation at the time of the alleged attack.

His bail application was denied due to an unacceptable risk to reoffend.

He was remanded in custody to appear again on June 22.

Mr Brookes broke down in tears in the dock when he was denied bail and called out “I love you” to his crying family members sitting in the court as he was taken away.
