Labrador Scouts Group plead for Gold Coasters to stop illegal dumping

A Gold Coast scouts club is pleading with people to stop leaving junk at its hall after a double bed frame was among items dumped there this week.

ILLEGAL dumping is causing a headache for a Gold Coast community group and they want to put an end to it.

The Labrador Scouts Hall on Turpin Road has become a hub for those who want and get rid of their junk.

The problem reached a new low this week when a double bed frame was dumped outside the hall.

Labrador Scouts executive committee chairman Karen Trevers-Grace said the mess was out of control.

“We have two charity bins near the hall but they get full quite easily,” she said.

“People are getting inspiration to clean up their homes and then they obviously find it easy to dump items near the hall even when the bins are full.

“The area has now been cleared but we need this to stop happening.

“Don’t dump, find an alternate place and just consider joining us at Scouts instead.”

Bonney MP Sam O’Connor encouraged Gold Coasters on his Facebook page not to leave rubbish near the Labrador Scout Hall “or anywhere”

“Illegal dumping is a big problem in our area,” he wrote.

The community can download the City of Gold Coast mobile application and help community organisations by reporting issues, like illegal dumping.

In light of widespread dumping of waste and donations at Op Shops and charity bins, national online charity GIVIT is calling Australians to donate safely via their online portal.

A GIVIT spokeswoman told the Bulletin their unique “virtual warehouse” allows individuals and businesses to donate items, services and cash.

“Registered charities can reserve donations when they’re needed, or can request specific items not already pledged that are urgently needed on the Gold Coast,” they said.

Vinnie’s and Lifeline have both reopened six shops and RSPCA have opened four. They are also accepting direct donations.
