The Gold Coast’s top facialist Kristina Gianneas says “harmful” skincare trends are going viral with kids aged as young as 10.

Ms Gianneas, who was voted by Gold Coast Bulletin readers as the city’s best facialist, said it was important for people to stay vigilant on social media because of skincare trends that “cause more harm than good”.

“For example, there has been a trend on TikTok lately among 10-year-olds that are using strong ingredients like retinol from a particular brand that is quite popular,” she said.

“While it’s great they’re taking an interest in skincare, they don’t need to be doing much to their skin at all.”

Ms Gianneas said strong ingredients like retinol or vitamin A were designed to stimulate skin cell turnover.

“It can cause irritation, redness and sensitivity by damaging their natural barrier on such young healthy skin,” she said.

“They could use light hydrating serums or moisturisers instead if they want to be using skincare.”

The 32-year-old skin therapist began working for SSKIN just over a year ago and said it was a privilege to be part of the beauty empire created by sisters Amy and Emilee Hembrow.

“I truly love being part of the team,” Ms Gianneas said.

“Our leadership and support is outstanding and as a team we’re always there for each other, sharing ideas, learning together and having fun.”

Ms Gianneas said the moment she finished high school she told her parents she wanted to join the beauty industry.

“My clients are the reason I do what I do,” she said.

Ms Gianneas graduated as valedictorian from The French Beauty Academy in 2010 and said she had been around the world working “at some of the most prestigious salon and spas”.

She said she believed the outside perception of the beauty industry was changing.

“In the past, our work was often seen as only offering pampering treatments, but the reality is that we are highly skilled and undergo significant training.”

The Gold Coast’s top five best facialists included Hannah Stronach from Face Fit who was runner-up, Sandy from The Coastal Clinic Aesthetics in third place, and Melanie Grace and Sharna Bree from Bella Donna Injectables and Skin as fourth and fifth.
