A search is underway south of the Gold Coast for a jetski rider feared missing in monster swell.
Emergency services were alerted to an emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) activation off the coast of Duranbah near Tweed Heads on Thursday.
“We have a trailer with a jetski missing,” Acting Gold Coast Chief Superintendent Peter Miles said.
“We are unsure now if we are looking for a person who was on a jetski. Paramount for us is that person’s safety.
“To know that there was someone out on a jetski out in this type of weather is quite concerning in the first place.”
Huge waves are continuing to chomp away at the coastline with a number of Gold Coast beaches badly damaged by erosion.
Hundred of people are defying warnings to stay at home, flooding the sand at Surfers Paradise, with parents even allowing their children to play in the whitewash.
Chief Supt Miles said he’s “flabbergasted” by what he has seen residents doing along the shoreline.
“Certainly being on the beach is a problem,” he said.
“We all need to be a bit more smart about this and ensure that we don’t have any unneeded rescues or potentially worse where we’re looking at fatalities.”
