In Pictures: Rock royalty Pearl Jam visit Gold Coast Indy
The Gold Coast is no stranger to a good old celebrity visit - here’s the moment we got a taste of rock royalty at the Indy.
Gold Coast
Don't miss out on the headlines from Gold Coast. Followed categories will be added to My News.
THIS is for all the rock fans out there. This picture of Pearl Jam, the US band founded in Seattle in 1990, was taken in the corporate suites at Gold Coast Indy in March 1995.
Being up to date with the ebbs and flows of who’s hot on the rock scene is not really our thing so we had next to no idea who they were at the time.
My only memory of them is that they were ultra-polite and good fun.
The man in the middle, looking a little too clean cut to be a rocker, was David Hilton, then one of the big bosses at Conrad Jupiters.
His other claims to fame are that he met his wife Jane here and he is the uncle of Paris Hilton.
The band was on a tour of Australia that year and came down after their gigs in Brisbane
to see the race.
PATRON’S FLASHY CELEBRATION AS RESTRICTIONS LIFT
A RETURN to semi-normal trading for restaurants after the easing of restrictions has affected some patrons in vastly different ways.
Take the flashing example of one female patron at a well-known eatery.
Overjoyed at being allowed out to party with her friends, she decided to showcase what long runs and working out at home had done for her figure.
Emerging from the ladies wearing a postage stamp G-string and a broad smile, she sprinted around the room to the loud cheers and wolf whistles of the other socially distant diners.
One admiring male, obviously a carnivore, was heard to quip after the show was run and done: “Now that’s what I call prime rump.”

WHEN the going gets tough, the tough open a new business.
Livewire creative type Louise McGregor has decided there is no time like the present to launch a fresh enterprise.
“On 1st July I am opening Finding Yellow Co. I love brand positioning and PR and yellow is my favourite colour because it represents life and joy – hence the name.
“The aim is to be a central source for marketing and creative solutions for businesses in the one place.
“The office is in The 4217 in my home of Surfers Paradise and YES I will be having a huge launch party once the restrictions have eased.
“We all have to look forward and plan for better days so that is what I am doing.”
FOOTBALL STARS UNDER PRESSURE ON COAST
YOU might have seen a recent episode of The Matty Johns Show on Fox in which ex-National Rugby League players Matty, Sam Burgess and Nathan Hindmarsh were put through their paces at Colin Handley’s Stunt Academy at Nerang.
We asked Colin for a snap shot of how the boys handled the pressure.
“Being ex-footballers they are naturally tough,” he said.
“They wanted to learn how to jump from up high for the show.
“We had to start them off low and slow because you can get seriously hurt if you don’t have the right technique.
“Nathan went first but was extremely nervous and gradually went up to 10 metres.
“Sam being competitive said he wanted to beat Nathan and go up to 13 metres so it took a bit more training but he handled it very well.
“The fun part was setting Matty on fire.
“He had all the protective clothing on but he didn’t understand that the residual heat gets trapped in the suit.
“When the flames were out he kept complaining about ‘burning’ but because he was making jokes we couldn’t get him out of the protective gear fast enough.
“It was a fun day with them but I’m not sure if they would do it again.”

NO HARD FEELINGS AFTER CRICHLOW’S ALMOST-ACCIDENT
YOU have to hand it to Dawn Crichlow.
“Driving through her beloved Southport last week she was almost involved in an accident. (It was not her fault since you asked.)
“The other driver came over to apologise and saw Princess Pookie, Dawn’s beloved 16-year-old dog, and commented on the canine’s pink ears.
To show there were no hard feelings, Dawn then handed over a bottle of Princess Pookie’s Southport Honey.
“I buy it from a friend, bottle it and put a label on to give to friends or people I meet.
“Princess Pookie has had her own olive oil and other produce over the years but a jar of honey seems to be the most popular.”
CHARLOTTE CUSH DRESSES TO IMPRESS
SOMEONE who has been counting down the days until she could dress up and get out is
oncology nurse and pageant queen Charlotte Cush.
She was spotted this week dressed to impress with a posse of gal pals enjoying lunch at Miss Moneypenny at Broadbeach.
She is wearing Meshki dress with Guess Handbag, LV jewellery and Swarovski crystals.
Her style and Fashion Favourites: “I love Blake Lively, she is sexy, sophisticated and classy. For designers I always look to Alex Perry, Shike and Bec and Bridge because they suit my style.”
COAST BIKINI QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY COMPLIMENTS
BIKINI queen Paula Stafford celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday.
We asked former top model Debbie Miller for her opinion on Paula as a person and a fashion designer.
“She was a trailblazer not only for her clothes but also how she helped me and lots of other models. She was always there to help and offer advice or encouragement.
“As for her bikinis, they were so well designed that you knew they would never move and they were cut in such a way that they flattered every girl.
“She designed all the Gold Coast Golden Girl uniforms and swimwear that we wore on promotional tours around Australia and you always felt so beautiful when you stepped out in her clothes.
“As a designer she was years ahead of her time and a wonderful person as well.”
Which gives us the chance to re-use that great quote by Aaron Levenstein.
“The bikini – what it reveals is interesting. What it conceals is fascinating.” What he said.
