Regional Victoria has 'opened up' – here's what's changed

THREE northern Gold Coast schools will receive multi-million dollar makeovers under an election pledge by Labor.

The Nerang, Worongary and William Duncan State schools in the Gaven electorate will share in $1.4 million of refurbishments under a re-elected Palaszczuk Government.

The projects are part of a one-billion-dollar investment in education across Queensland, improving school facilities and supporting more than 3100 jobs during the economic recovery from COVID-19.

Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon, said she was pleased to see the funding available for important upgrades at the schools.

“This $1.4 million funding is very welcome news for the students and staff at these wonderful local schools — and also for local tradies who can tender for these projects,” she said.

“At William Duncan, I’ve secured $700,000 for upgrades to the multipurpose area to improve facilities for STEM, art and music.

“The school is renowned for its music department so I’m really pleased to be able to provide this funding to upgrade the multipurpose space.

“Nerang State School will receive $350,000 to go towards general upgrades around the school, including to its prep playground.

“We know how important it is for our preppies to have great play spaces so they can make the most of their school experience, both inside and outside the classroom.

“The school will also look at replacement of guttering and roof repairs out of the $350,000 allocation as well.

“And at Worongary, I’ve secured $350,000 for upgrades to the STEM building — something I’ve been advocating for on behalf of the school.

“From visiting my wonderful local schools, I know that often it’s these smaller projects that make such a difference to schools,”

Labor had previously announced $5 million to upgrade the performing arts space at Nerang State High School and $22 million to build extra classrooms at Pacific Pines State High School,

Education Minister Grace Grace said the government’s plan for economic recovery from COVID-19 begins with job creation.

“We always encourage our schools to engage local tradespeople to complete maintenance works and smaller jobs in schools,” she said.

“By investing in new and upgraded school infrastructure we are providing world-class education facilities for Queensland students.

MORE than a dozen Gold Coast schools will share in $78 million worth of upgrades, as part of a new Labor initiative.

The investment, to be delivered under a re-elected Labor Government, is part of a larger $1 billion education policy to modernise schools.

A total of 15 Gold Coast schools will share in the money, creating everything from new classrooms to security fencing.

Also getting new classrooms is Palm Beach State School ($10.6 million), Picnic Creek State School ($9.1 million) and Ormeau Woods State High School ($8.185 million).

Palm Beach Currumbin State High School and Miami State High School have each been given $10 million for new indoor sports facilities.

Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon said she was pleased to see more funding for schools in her electorate.

“The $22 million investment in additional classrooms for Pacific Pines State High is fantastic news for the local school community,” she said.

“The school has been consistently growing and this massive investment means the school will have the infrastructure it needs to grow into the future.”

She was joined in making the Friday announcement by Coomera Labor candidate Kaylee Campradt and Burleigh candidate Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew.

Coomera candidate Chris Johnson, Bonney’s Ash Borg and Theodore’s Tracey Bell were also at the announcement.

Mr Johnson said the rapidly growing northern Gold Coast was a “big winner”.

“The Coomera area is growing so rapidly so it’s great to see both Ormeau Woods State High and Picnic Creek State School receiving funding to cater for enrolment growth,” he said.
