Gold Coast real estate agents say business remains strong despite coronavirus fears

While other parts of the economy are struggling, the real estate business on the Gold Coast remains strong. Here’s why.

Qantas grounds international flights and stands down staff during coronavirus outbreak

GOLD COAST real estate agents are facing a new set of rules as they continue to operate open homes during the coronavirus outbreak, but industry leaders say they haven’t been hit hard yet.

As of this week major agencies like LJ Hooker and Ray White have decided they will not allow unregistered viewers into open homes to ensure any cases of the virus can be traced if need be. Inspectors have also been asked to refrain from touching doors, cupboards and drawers to assist in keeping surfaces clean.

Ray White Surfers Paradise CEO Andrew Bell said the industry remains consistent despite the impact on other sectors.

“We are subject to following a code of conduct the health authorities have put in place which means no physical contact, social distancing and other things, but our work still continues,” he said.

Mr Bell said the corona panic has meant there are less people browsing at open homes, but genuine buyers and renters have still been out in force.

“We see that we are really providing an essential service, people still need a roof over their heads and it would be terrible for us not to be able to do that.

“We have seen slightly less people showing up to homes in general, but that generally means fewer neighbours are dropping in to have a look about.

“Inquiries remain pretty consistent.”

As of last week the branch sold 16 of 20 homes at auction and core logic data reveals 70.6 per cent of homes were sold at auction last weekend.

“At the moment we are just being pragmatic,” Mr Bell said.

“We are fortunate in a way because we are still able to communicate online, or show homes via video. If there is a contraction there certainly won’t be a halt.”

A spokeswoman from LJ Hooker Southport said they also haven’t seen a big impact on open homes.

“Everyone seems to understand the situation at the moment and they are adapting.

“We have also started posting signs outside all open home asking people who are unwell not to enter.”
