Horses trapped by floodwater on Gold Coast

A GROUP of good Samaritans braved flash flood waters at Mudgeeraba this afternoon to save three horses at risk of drowning.

Local Danni Crowe posted the emotional video online at around noon, calling for urgent help to remove the animals from the sodden paddock.

“When I turned onto Somerset Drive I couldn’t believe the water,” Ms Crowe said.

“All of a sudden cars were driving on the other side of the road towards us.

“I pulled over to call the police about traffic management and in five minutes the water went from around my ankles to my knees.”

Ms Crowe said she saw horses in the neighbouring paddock wading though the water, which was rising.

“We knew they wouldn’t be safe for long, we had to get them to safety straight away,” she said.

“As soon as I put the call out up people were there to help, it was a mother and daughter and a couple.

“The water went from a puddle to something with the power to wash away the trough, it was so frightening.”

The panicked owner of the animals arrived as they were being moved by the volunteers.

“The poor thing, no one predicted how fast the water was rising,” Ms Crowe said.

“She was beside herself.”

Thanks to the help of another Mudgeeraba local, a dry paddock was found for the horses.

“We had to walk them all the way up the road, the whole thing took about an hour but it was amazing how wiling people were keen to help,” she said.

“One woman offered her paddock, others walked the animals, other people stopped traffic.

“I think it just shows what an amazing community we have here.”
