THE swinging ’60s were in full cry on the Gold Coast in 1965.

The Bulletin’s front page brought exciting news of Woolworths announcing plans for a new shop at Southport. It would lead two years later to the construction of the Sundale shopping centre.
Land remained remarkably cheap, with Southport Property Holdings offering 11 absolute waterfront sites on Hollywell Road for just 1195 pounds.
Television had come to Australia in the 10 years since 1955 and there were plenty of advertisements for the black-and-white units, with duel TV/record players on offer.
Volkswagen began selling its iconic Kombi van at Gold Coast dealerships.
The Gold Coast’s famous bars, including the Skyline at the Chevron Paradise Hotel, offered live entertainment, including The Rhodesians, a band formerly known as The Strangers.
