The game that lets you smell farts

THERE is a wall on the Gold Coast which has an incredibly unique problem which is leaving those who come into contact with it completely baffled.

The wall, at random intervals, will make a noise which to put it nicely, sounds like someone breaking wind, or “trumping”, a term that dates back to the 15th century..

There is no smell after the sound.

The gaseous wall is situated in the infrequently used court 16 at the Southport Courthouse, just behind the prisoner dock and where police officers sit.

Solicitors, prosecutors, barristers and court staff speak often about the wall and it’s disturbing sounds but no one knows the cause.

It is known by those at court as “the farting wall”.

The off-putting sound has been emanating from the wall for at least three years.

When the wall decides to make a sound is always a surprise but often seems to happen when the court is silent and a Judge is reading.

Unsuspecting police officers have often jumped when they hear the sound, looking around to determine the cause.

Theories of why the wall makes a sound include the audio equipment, plumbing or someone opening a door in another courtroom.

The courtroom is only used when a visiting Judge is at Southport to help reduce workloads.

It was also used as the media room during first four weeks of the Dreamworld inquest.

A spokesman for the Department of Justice and Attorney-General said the wall’s flatulence had never been raised with members of the judiciary.

“Thus, there has been no requirement for an investigation of any noises in Court 16,” he said.

The Bulletin’s request to record audio of the noise was declined.

For now the reason behind the farting wall remains a mystery.
