A tower is to be built on a beachside site near the light rail’s planned Burleigh extension, with backers hoping its highly unusual design will make it a landmark in the area.

A BEACHSIDE site near the light rail’s planned Burleigh extension will be transformed into a new tower.
Developer Velocity Property has revealed plans for a 14-storey tower on Burleigh Heads’ First Ave.

It will have 35 units, with two on each floor of the building, which will overlook the suburb’s famous beach.
It will replace a single-storey house on the 936 sqm site.
According to documents filed with the Gold Coast City Council, the shape of rolling waves inspired its design.

“The distinctive design of the building and its sculptural features are intended to position the building as a landmark in this visually prominent location,” the planning report said.
“The iconic curl feature of the building references the coastal setting and lifestyle aspect of the Burleigh Heads area in form and materiality.
“The oversized sweeping curl at roof level flows down the western face of the building in a grand architecture gesture.
“4 First Ave is designed in homage to the coastal locale with a sculptural form evocative of ocean waves.”
The project will go before the council’s planning committee next year.
