AN AGEING Gold Coast shopping centre will be doubled in size as part of a multimillion-dollar redevelopment which will create space for new supermarkets, restaurants and outdoor dining.

My Centre Nerang will be revamped as Nerang Town Centre, with plans now before council to transform the suburban shopping centre into a four-level complex with nearly 10,000 sqm of extra floorspace.

Nerang councillor Peter Young welcomed the investment in his suburb but admitted he had mixed feelings about some elements of the project.

“Lots of excitement in Nerang with the surprise announcement from My Centre of the proposed expansion of the centre,” he said.

“While investment in Nerang is certainly welcome, my excitement about introducing another supermarket, possibly taken from an existing site in Nerang, is at a pretty low level.

“This site has been identified in the City Plan in the town centre precinct for decades, and hence this form of development has long been anticipated.

“I should add that the centre management say that additional investment is proposed to be followed up in future stages.”

The new wing of the complex will be built on an empty site which was recently cleared of its trees.

Plans filed with council reveal the completed Nerang Town Centre will cover 4.2ha and more than 19,644 sqm of floorspace.

It comes nearly eight years after plans were lodged with the council to expand the complex and build a cinema.

While approved by council, the work has yet to begin.

The Nerang Town Centre redevelopment is the second shopping centre in the Hinterland suburb to announce a revamp in the past year.

In April 2020 Cinemark, submitted $30 million plans to the Gold Coast City Council to revamp and expand the Earle Plaza complex at Nerang and transform it into a modern shopping mecca.
