HOPE Island’s status as the Gold Coast’s new development hotspot has been underlined, with one of the city’s most prominent developers unveiling plans for a giant $48 million townhouse project.

Aniko Group, which has more than $400 million in Gold Coast projects in the pipeline, has filed plans with council for the unnamed 58-house project, earmarked for 31-35 Grant Ave.

It will neighbour Aniko’s under-construction $140 million No. 1 Grant Ave unit tower.

Aniko boss George Mastrocostas said he had greenlit the project with the state government moving ahead with its plans to build a new railway station in the area and the $1.5 billion first stage of the Coomera Connector.

“We’re very excited to be announcing the next phase of what we are doing in Hope Island,” he said.

“With the pending Hope Island rail station and the commencement of the Coomera Connector to significantly decrease travel times between Brisbane and the central Gold Coast, we believe Hope Island will continue to thrive as the epicentre of the Gold Coast’s North Shore.

“We are very eager to get this into the market given the success we have seen despite the very difficult conditions of 2020.”

Construction of the Coomera Connector is set to begin in July and will run for more than three years.

The Coomera Connector will be a six-lane, 45km arterial road to run from Nerang to Logan.

It is expected to take up to 60,000 vehicles off the M1 every day and was fully gazetted in 2019 by the state government.

Construction is also expected to soon begin on three new railway stations which will be built on the Gold Coast line – Helensvale North (Hope Island), Pimpama and Merrimac.

Many Gold Coast developers have rushed projects to the market in the past six months to capitalise on a booming property market.

Brisbane-based Spyre Group last week announced it had sold out its first three Gold Coast projects — the $79m Elysian at Broadbeach, $77m Natura at Burleigh Heads and $25m MAYA project at Kirra.

It is now preparing to fast-track a redevelopment of the Komune Resort site at Coolangatta. The project is before the Gold Coast City Council awaiting approval.

Several other major projects, including Vue Terrace at Robina, have also sold out in recent months.

Many of the buyers are downsizers and those relocating to the Gold Coast from NSW and Victoria in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
