A MAN armed with a firearm tried to rob a Gold Coast service station last night.

Police are investigating the events surrounding the attempted armed robbery of a service station in Southport overnight.

At around 9pm a service station employee saw a man acting suspiciously outside the Nerang Street business. The 50-year-old worker directed a customer inside the store to leave.

The employee, who was working as the store attendant, then retreated to a back room.

But before the 59-year-old male customer could make his way out of the store, a man entered and threatened him with a firearm, while making demands for money.

After the customer told the man that he was not an employee and could not open the till, the armed man fled the scene empty-handed.

No one was physically injured in the incident.

Police have described the armed man as aged in his 20s and wearing a black hoodie, sunglasses and shorts.

Investigations are ongoing.
