The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

An 18-year-old who evaded police while driving his mum’s Honda Jazz has been slapped with a $7000 fine and won’t be able to drive for two years.

Police were conducting patrols in Arundel in December last year when they saw Kaleb George Jones, 18, driving towards them on the wrong side of the road, the court was told.

They activated lights and sirens and attempted to intercept the car.

Instead of stopping, Jones ran a red light and continued to drive away.

They later tracked the car’s registration to the 18-year-old’s mother and it was discovered Jones had been driving it at the time, the court was told.

The 18-year-old’s lawyer, Ashkan Tai said his client was leaving a “skid” event when the offending occurred, saying “adrenaline got the better of him”.

He wrote a letter of apology to the court expressing his regret over the incident, the court was told.

The Edens Landing teen pleaded guilty in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday to evading police, failing to stop on a red traffic light and failing to keep to the left of two continuous driving lines.

His girlfriend and father were present in the courtroom for sentencing.

The evasion charge attracted a minimum fine of $7187 or 50 days in prison and a mandatory two-year disqualification from driving.

Jones was fined $$7187 for the evasion and disqualified from driving for two years.

No convictions were recorded.

The fine was referred to SPER.
