Gold Coast’s globetrotting superstar DJ Fisher will be headlining and hosting his own festival at one his local beaches alongside a “huge international” line-up.
On Thursday, Fisher revealed one of the worst-kept secrets on the Gold Coast - his own “epic” concert Out 2 Lunch festival scheduled for Coolangatta beach on Saturday, May 4.
The festival, promoted by TEG Live, will feature international acts including Flight Facilities, Vintage Culture and Little Shimmy.
“Guys, I’m coming down under,” Fisher said.
“Are you kidding me? We’re on the beach. We’re going mad. Get your tickets and get ready to rock and roll.
“See you on the dancefloor.”
The festival, which will mark the last day of the World Surfing League event at Snapper Rocks, originally raised some concerns when it was getting approval from council.
But in November last year, the festival organisers said the event was predicted to inject more than $5m into the Gold Coast economy.
“With approximately 70 per cent of attendees expected to travel from outside the Gold Coast (based on benchmarking similar concerts), the projected total visitor spend of the event is over $5.5m and a $4.7m value add (economic impact) into the Gold Coast economy,” a report to council read.
While the vote by councillors showed they were strongly divided, the festival was given the green light.
At the time division 9 councillor Glenn Tozer encouraged the promoter to help fund the lifeguards who would have to handle the crowds. At the time he also blurted out Fisher would be playing before comically trying to retract that.
Officers confirmed the “out of pocket costs” for council would be funded by event organisers.
Despite some concerns, deputy mayor Donna Gates said: “We will suffer great reputational damage if we don’t support an event like this. We are striving to be the events capital of Australia”.
Tickets go on sale February 9 at 10am and all festivalgoers will have access to free public transport to and from Coolangatta Beach.
