A Palm Beach man who advertised “rare coins” for sale on Facebook has been ordered to compensate his victim after he failed to supply the goods.

Daniel Ryan Hughes, 20, pleaded guilty to fraud - dishonestly gain benefit - in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

On February 14, Hughes posted an advertisement of “rare coins” for sale on Facebook Marketplace, the court was told.

The victim responded to the advertisement and agreed to pay $320 for the coins, transferring the money to a bank account.

The victim did not receive the coins they paid for and their attempts to contact Hughes were unsuccessful, the court was told.

They reported the incident to police, who later tracked down Hughes.

The 20-year-old had committed four dishonesty offences in the past, according to duty lawyer Lisa Searing.

“He’s had no convictions recorded up until this point. It’s unfortunate he finds himself here today,” Ms Searing said.

She told Magistrate Pamela Dowse that her client had recently started work as a butcher.

“He’s in a situation now where he’s starting to put his life back on track,” Ms Searing said.

“He does seem to be someone who is making significant changes in his life.”

Magistrate Dowse described Hughes’ behaviour as “very bad” and questioned why he would do such a thing.

“I’m not sure,” the Palm Beach man responded. “At the time, I thought it was a smart decision, but I know it’s not now.”

Hughes was fined $500 and ordered to pay $320 restitution to his victim.
