Exclusive: Plans for popular hinterland golf course to include Mona-style art events space

It’s being touted as south-east Queensland’s version of Tasmania’s Mona – a new cultural arts experience on the edge of a well-known Gold Coast golf course. Take a look at what’s planned.

It’s being touted as south-east Queensland’s version of Tasmania’s Mona – a new cultural arts experience on the edge of a well-known Gold Coast golf course.

The Bulletin has obtained the first images of a planned $10 million tourism investment at the Boomerang Farm west of Mudgeeraba.

Boomerang Farm owner-manager Stevie Filipovic said the site would undergo rebranding and be given a new name in the New Year.

“I think what we are doing there can give something like Mona (in Tasmania) a run and be its equivalent for Queensland,” Mr Filipovic said.

“The whole space is designed to be reduced or enlarged in size, so we can have different forms of art. From 100 square metres to 500 square metres in (enclosed) space, or outside space that could be used for theatre production.”

Mr Filipovic said the rebranding would fit with the different direction of the site which could be used for weddings, functions and sports like pickleball and mountain biking.

“After 30 years it’s not just a nine hole golf course anymore. It’s about bringing arts to the property,” he said.

Mr Filipovic and Jonathan Leishman, director of the Churchill Development Group, are working on the project and have employed leading architect Jesse Bennett.

“The new arts and cultural space, designed by Jesse Bennett, is where cutting-edge architecture meets the untamed beauty of the Gold Coast Hinterland,” Mr Filipovic said.

“Inside, you’ll find immersive galleries, bold installations, and spaces built for discovery –whether it’s a quiet nook for reflection or a venue for vibrant performances. This is a building that invites curiosity and sparks imagination at every turn.

“And it’s not all serious. There’ll be places to eat, drink, and linger, because art isn’t just something you look at – it’s something you live.”

Hinterland councillor Glenn Tozer confirmed Boomerang Farm owners had been involved in pre-lodgement meetings with council officers and received approvals for several new components on the site.

Boomerang Farm will be renamed in late January when a new brand will be launched which owners say “regulars will be happy with”.

“I’m really excited about Stevie and Jonathan’s project at what will soon be previously known as Boomerang Farm, in the heart of the Gold Coast hinterland, just west of Mudgeeraba,” Mr Tozer said.

The work on upgrading function facilities to include an arts and event space is expected to be lodged with council between March and June next year.

“With a next generation recreational golf experience, exhilarating downhill mountain biking, and the fastest growing sport in the world in pickleball the team are really augmenting an already planned phenomenal art gallery experience that will be like nothing the Coast has seen,” Cr Tozer said.

“Importantly, much of these land uses are already principally approved and just need assessment of their improved flood resilience and new building locations.”

Mr Tozer earlier this week outlined more than $30m of eco-tourism opportunities which he believes need to be fast tracked in the hinterland and reduced of government red tape.
