A Gold Coast lawyer snapped in a nightclub with AFL boss Eddie McGuire has defended the TV show host, revealing what happened when the picture was taken.

Gold Coast criminal defence lawyer Ashkan Tai was snapped giving the thumbs up next to McGuire and Gold Coast nightclub identity Joey Lamattina at the Pink Flamingo over the weekend.

The photograph caused a national stir with many questioning why the Collingwood boss did not have to restrict his movements like players in the AFL hub do.

McGuire is staying outside the hub and is on the Gold Coast to film episodes of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Mr Tai, the director of Ashkan Tai Lawyers, made his name representing well-known bikies, including Liam Scorsese, who was fatally shot by police in 2018.

“I think it’s been blown out of proportion, hundreds of people were out that night, following government rules and of course those implemented by the venue,” Mr Tai said.

“Why target him because he took a photograph?

“Every Aussie bloke, whether they are famous or not should be able to take their son out for a drink and not have to get their photo plastered in the media the next morning then be forced to offer an explanation.”

Mr Tai said the rules applied to the rich and famous as well as those who are not so rich or famous.

“The rich and famous don’t have to explain how they’re complying simply because someone who has got an issue with them makes a big deal,” he said.

“We are better than that!”

Mr Tai urged people to focus on more pressing issues and “not whingeing about sports players in quarantine”.
