A drone user has prompted fears of a potential ”tragedy” after it allegedly flew too close of a rescue helicopter on a mission.
The police helicopter and the Westpac Surf Lifesaving Rescue Helicopter had both been called to Kurrawa Beach about 2pm on Sunday after a woman went missing and was believed to be in the water.
The choppers were searching the area from the air in an effort to find the woman.
While they were flying, both allegedly spotted a drone being flown close to them.
It is understood police on the ground were able to locate the drone’s pilot on the beach.
A Queensland Police spokesman said: “Police received a report of a drone flying close to operational aircraft at Kurrawa Beach after 2pm.
“A short time later officers located a 30-year-old woman nearby, allegedly operating the drone.
“Officers have seized the drone and investigations into the incident are ongoing.”
Surf Lifesaving Queensland Gold Coast supervisor Nathan Fife said the incident was a reminder for drone users to be careful where they are flying – especially around other aircraft.
“If a drone hits a helicopter it could be a tragedy,” he said.
According to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority website drones must not be flown in an area where emergency operations are underway.
They must also be on the look out for manned aircraft.
“If you become aware of manned aircraft nearby, you must manoeuvre away and land your drone as quickly and safely as possible,” the website says.
