No beach, no worries: Raving reviews for Fisher festival

Around 20,000 DJ Fisher fans descended onto the Gold Coast for “Australia’s biggest beach festival”, despite there being a lack of … beach.

Paul Fisher – also known as DJ Fisher – came out with a bang for the first night of his two-day hometown festival, Out 2 Lunch, at Broadwater Parklands on Saturday.

The festival, which last year was coined “Australia’s biggest beach festival” at Coolangatta, was moved to Surfers Paradise before being shifted to the parklands due to damage left by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

However, festivalgoers at the Saturday festival said, no beach, no worries.

“It’s a lot less muddy this year and you’re not getting sand all in your shoes,” Jack Brumpton said.

“I mean we can’t see the beach but I’m loving the scenery. Pros and cons,” Damon Wirth added.

Longtime Fisher fans Harry Fitzjohn and Leroy Allen said they preferred the location change.

“If you have nice shoes and you’re on the beach they will get wrecked,” Mr Allen said.

In the lead up to festival Fisher shared a sneak-peak of the grounds and said it was “f**king unbelievable”.

“I’m absolutely frothing,” he said on Instagram.

“The line-up’s sensational.

“This is going to be pumping.”

TEG head of global touring Tim McGregor said they were “determined” to keep the festival on the Gold Coast despite the challenges.

“Relocating to Broadwater Parklands has proven to be an inspired choice,” he said.

“After the incredible response last year, we took a bold step and expanded to two days – a big move, but it clearly paid off, with tens of thousands pouring in over the weekend.

“Bringing some of the world’s biggest acts to this stunning spot has made for an unforgettable kick-off. We couldn’t be prouder.”

Last year, the “spectacular” Coolangatta festival injected more than $50 million into the local economy with a similar boost projected for this year’s two-day bonanza.

Fisher headlined the main stage which also featured English DJ Patrick Topping, Australian DJ Hayden James, LA-based artist Noizu and Gold Coast-based DJ Jake Smith.

And that’s just day one … on Sunday, English DJ Chris Lake, Australian producer DJ Boring, Gold Coast-based DJ Little Fritter and Australian DJ Shimmy will take the stage before Fisher’s headlining set.
