The shocking incident, which happened in broad daylight in a sleepy Gold Coast cul-de-sac, was described by a witness as “the most horrible situation” she had ever seen.

Police said the 34-year-old male victim had met with a man he was speaking to via Facebook Marketplace about the sale of a watch.

When the victim showed the man the watch, the thief snatched it and fled on foot to a red car waiting at the nearby Glen Eagles Dr, according to police.

Kate Robinson said she was alerted to the commotion and watched in shock as her neighbour chased the thief and approached the red car.

“As he approached the car, the car pulled out and struck him and sped off,” she said.

“When I got there, I found my neighbour face down on the road.

“It was the most horrible situation I have ever seen.”

Ms Robinson described the thief as being a “dark-skinned African male” and said her neighbour was trying to sell his Rolex to him.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said paramedics attended the scene after reports of a person being struck by a car.

The 34-year-old man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition with facial and shoulder injuries.

Police are still searching for the thief and the investigation is ongoing.

Ms Robinson urged others to be cautious when selling items on Facebook Marketplace or other sites such as Gumtree.

“It is not regulated and it’s not safe,” she said.

“This situation (shows) how scary and terrifying Facebook Marketplace is and how you can be robbed and harmed by criminals.”
