A southern Gold Coast mum is on a desperate hunt for information regarding a hit-and-run driver who allegedly cleaned up her teen son while he was riding his bicycle home from a friend’s place, while the boy was in a race to be fit for the first day of school as his face swelled up like a balloon.

According to his mother, the Currumbin Waters teenager, 16, who can’t be legally identified, was riding home along Currumbin Creek Rd about 10pm on January 24 when he was suddenly collected from behind near the intersection with Villiers Dr.

“He was about to cross the road, looked behind and saw the car coming, thought it was a long way away and had quite a bit of time,” the mother said.

“Next minute he woke up lying on the opposite side of the road and was quite dazed and confused, unsure as to what happened, until he saw his bike ahead of him all twisted and ruined. “He was obviously concussed and not with it.”

The mother claimed the driver of the vehicle, who looked to be aged in her late twenties, initially stopped to ask her son if he was okay, but told him to “f--- off” and drove away when he attempted to obtain her details.

Despite being only a few blocks from home, the boy was unable to tell his mother where he was.

“He called me hysterical, said he’d been run over,” the mother said.

“I jumped in my car and drove down there with my nine-year-old, and found him slumped against a fence on the side of the road.

“Blood everywhere, all the way down to his shoes, it was quite horrific.”

The boy was transported to Pindara Private Hospital about 3.30am the following morning, according to the mother, where he underwent scans and received stitches above his eyebrow and top lip and on the inside of his lips.

According to the mum her son returned to hospital on Saturday night complaining of severe abdominal pain, which clinicians initially thought could be a burst spleen, but was subsequently confirmed to be “severe internal bruising”.

“The swelling today [Sunday] is unbelievable,” the mother said.

Her son was troubled and deeply embarrassed by what had transpired.

“He can only eat soft foods or fluids and is having nightmares,” the mother said.

“He’s just about to start year 11 on Wednesday, but I don’t even know if he’s going to be able to get there.”

In recent days, the mother has taken to social media calling for information or footage from around the intersection at the relevant time, but with scant information to go on – her son was able to offer only the vaguest description, and the area is largely uncovered by CCTV – it remains unclear whether the alleged hit-run driver will be brought to justice.

“I don’t understand how any person can clearly see someone covered in blood, abuse someone and then drive off,” she said.

“I would think you would still call the ambulance before you took off.”

A police spokeswoman confirmed a complaint had been made, but additional information was needed to progress the investigation.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed they transported a “stable teenage male patient from a private address to Pindara hospital with minor facial and leg injuries after a reported vehicle and bicycle incident on Currumbin Creek Rd”.
