APPLICATIONS for up to eight 30-storey towers put to council by Clive Palmer have lain dormant for seven months without action from the billionaire entrepreneur-turned politician.

City of Gold Coast revealed council officers requested more information from Palmer Leisure Australia in July regarding applications submitted for the major proposal in May.

A council spokesman said officers were yet to hear back from Mr Palmer about the project which is unable to progress without further engagement with Palmer Leisure Australia.

“Council Officers issued an information request to the applicant for both development applications in July 2015,” he said.

“The applicant has not yet responded to these requests and as such the applications cannot progress to the public notification stage or the decision stage.”

The project proposed for Palmer’s golf course and resort sites on a floodplain in Robina and Merrimac would have seen up to 5000 residences constructed as well as a chapel, high-rises and new roads.

Fairfax MP Clive Palmer has been under constant scrutiny in the last month since his company Queensland Nickel fell into administration in January after sacking 237 workers amid allegations huge donations had been made from the struggling company to the Palmer United Party in the 2014-15 financial year.

Mermaid Beach state MP Ray Stevens said given Mr Palmer’s business struggles coupled with the challenge he might face with an application to build on a floodplain meant it was unlikely the project would ever get off the ground.

Mr Palmer did not return calls from the Gold Coast Bulletin yesterday.
