Border wars: Premiers clash over interstate travel

OPINIONS are split on the streets of Main Beach with residents sitting on either side of the debate whether Annastacia Palaszczuk should confirm a date to reopen the borders.

Like many businesses Hot Shotts in Main Beach would like the Queensland Premier to set in stone the July 10 date, as originally outlined as the date borders will reopen in the Governments road map to easing restrictions.

The supervisor of the cafe on Tedder Ave Holly Higgins said the Premier’s decision to move forward stage two of the road map has helped business but believes it’ll boom when people from outside Queensland can come in.

“The date keeps changing, the government says this and that but never set a date,” she said.

“We’re hoping this date will be it, but they keep changing.

“It would be nice for our regular customers from interstate to be able to come back.”

Peter Drouyn and Peter Reaburn are Main Beach royalty, having spent their lives surfing on its beach and enjoying a coffee and catch up at the Tedder Ave cafes.

The friends had contrary opinions but said they respect both sides of the debate.

“I’m pretty grey on these matters, I see why the Prime Minister wants to open things up for the economy, but I see why Ms Palaszczuk needs to make sure Queenslanders are safe,” Mr Reaburn said.

“As long as it doesn’t affect anyone’s health, I’m happy for them to open,” he said.

Dale Franks said Annastacia Palaszczuk was doing what’s best for the people in the state.

“I don’t see why the borders need to be opened yet. The Premier is doing what’s right for the people in Queensland,” he said.

Pip Clayton also supports Ms Palaszczuk so far but said it’s time for her to make a decision.

“She is doing a great job but it’s now time to set a date,” she said.
