JOHN Flynn Private Hospital is in discussions with Queensland Health to help it work through a backlog of elective surgery patients.

Newly-appointed chief executive officer Adam Stevenson said the Tugun hospital offered a full range of services, including complex cases across all different areas of medicine.

“We’re working through the process with the Gold Coast University Hospital service to try and assist them facilitate public patients in our theatres,” he said.

The announcement follows completion of a $30 million redevelopment of the hospital that includes 30 extra private rooms, two operating theatres, doubling the size of the emergency department, 116 added car parks plus new imaging and renal dialysis facilities.

“The two new operating theatres will help reduce surgery waiting times and increase convenience for patients and doctors, while the new ward will create 30 extra private single-bed rooms, affording patients more comfort during their stay,” Mr Stevenson said.

“The emergency department expansion brings the number of bays to 14, plus four associated rooms, and ED patients will no longer have to pay out-of-pocket costs for medical imaging services at John Flynn, thanks to a partnership with South Coast Radiology SCR.”

Mr Stevenson said SCR’s digital PET scanner would be the first fully digital scanner in Queensland and a first for any private imaging company in Australia.

South Coast Radiology will run John Flynn’s new nuclear medicine department.

“A new renal dialysis unit also marks a major milestone for the hospital, as it has been moved from the main building to the John Flynn Cancer Centre, meaning it is now co-located with the new day oncology unit,” he said.

“The renovation was able to be completed much sooner than originally planned, by incorporating existing space beneath the original buildings rather than constructing a new building from scratch.”
