Main Beach cafe expands

A new pop-up bar and dining experience will take over the site left vacant following the shock closure of the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf Tavern.

YOT Deck will open at the Main Beach location on August 10 and is expected to trade until Easter next year.

The new summer entertainment venue is a partnership between YOT Club and Main Beach Superyacht Marina.

It comes after famed waterfront tavern, known to locals for 25 years as Fishos, closed last month ahead of a multimillion-dollar redevelopment.

The Giannarelli and Pelligra groups have lodged a development application for a proposed Main Beach Superyacht Marina and Ritz Carlton Hotel on the site.

Giannarelli Group CEO Dion Giannarelli said it was a shame to leave the former Fishos site empty while it awaited demolition.

“Fisherman’s Wharf Tavern decided to leave the venue, that was their own call, we didn’t ask them to leave,” he said.

“We thought the best thing to do was re-open the venue and bring something back to the community – it’s in such an iconic spot.

“So we spoke to David Fisher of YOT Club, who’s a long-time family friend, and it will be relaunched as the YOT Deck.”

“It’s going to be a really fun, nautical-themed pop-up to tie in with the YOT Club brand.”

The pop-up will have its grand launch party on August 18.

Mr Giannarelli said it would employ 50 people.

“The marina is such an active place on a daily basis and it’s sad to not see anything there,” he said.

Mr Fisher said the venue would be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

“The beauty of the site has always been the aspect. It’s a fantastic view,” he said.

More than 30 Gold Coast tourism operators based at Mariner’s Cove have been faced with uncertainty after a $480m redevelopment for the area was announced.
