Tributes have poured in for a man who was found dead at a Gold Coast home, with friends remembering him as a “great mate to everybody” and a “top bloke”.

Trevor Schneider’s body was found at an Ashmore home on Sunday after officers were called to conduct a welfare check at the request of friends and the property owner.

Police have charged Jessie Dean Buchanan, 36, with murder after the death of the 62-year-old. He is also charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and receiving tainted property.

The 62-year-old’s friend Steve Batho said he was in a “state of shock” after a mutual friend broke the news of his mate’s death.

“When I heard that, I was absolutely shocked. He is a decent fella and it is the last thing you think would happen,” Mr Batho said.

He believed the 62-year-old had been having a few drinks at the Musgrave Hill Bowls Club before his death.

“Trevor was always a nice bloke to work with - he is an easy-going fella,” Mr Batho said.

“He was a great mate to everybody and always wanted to have a chat with people.

“(He) worked all his life and no doubt (was) looking forward to his retirement and then this happens.”

Mr Schneider worked as a truck driver at Gold Coast City Council and was described as a “hard worker”.

A council spokeswoman said his colleagues were “shocked and saddened” by the news.

“We have reached out to Trevor’s family to offer our support and condolences during this difficult time,” she said.

“Trevor was a long-serving and valued team member who was a hard worker and popular with his colleagues.

“City staff are being offered counselling services and we will assist police if required.”

Tributes for the 62-year-old were also posted on social media.

“Condolences to the Schneider family - a dearly missed work colleague and friend. Rest in peace my dear friend,” one colleague wrote on Facebook.

“He was a top man and will always be remembered,” one woman wrote.
