A man accused of causing serious injuries to a woman in a jet ski crash at Main Beach has handed himself in to police more than five years after the alleged incident.

Jafar Alhuseini had been wanted by police since 2018, when police alleged he failed to appear at his scheduled court hearing date and a summons.

A police spokeswoman said the 26-year-old Lakemba man voluntarily attended the Southport Police Station on September 27, where he was arrested and charged with one count of fail to appear.

According to court documents, it was alleged Alhuseini unsafely operated a jet ski causing grievous bodily harm to a woman.

On April 22, 2017, two jet skis collided at Main Beach, resulting in a then-21-year-old woman suffering a broken pelvis.

Alhuseini was 21 at the time.

A police spokeswoman said police charged the Lakemba man in 2018 with one count of general obligation on persons involved with operation of ship to operate it safely causing grievous bodily harm.

“He was issued with a notice to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court on August 21, 2018 and returned to his home in New South Wales in the interim,” the spokeswoman said.

“It will be alleged that the man failed to appear at his scheduled court hearing on that date.

“The QPS attempted to contact the man several times but did not receive a response, then organised for NSW Police to serve him with a summons.

“The man then failed to appear on that summons and the QPS issued a warrant for the man’s arrest.”

Alhuseini was wanted by police for four years before he handed himself in last month.

He did not appear during a brief mention of his matter in the Southport Magistrates Court last week.

Magistrate Mark Bamberry adjourned the matter to November 8 at the request of the man’s legal representative.
