Gold Coast builder banned from Bunnings Warehouse store after bizarre act

A Gold Coast tradie who runs his own building company has faced court after a bizarre act saw him banned from a Bunnings store. Find out what he did.

Baffling Bunnings mystery solved

A Gold Coast builder found himself banned from a Bunnings Warehouse after he stole $100 worth of building goods.

Aron John Mackie, 32, pinched the items despite earning about $3000 per week, Southport Magistrates Court was told.

On May 18, the father of two entered the hardware store on Logan Rd, Mount Gravatt wearing his work uniform and put items in his pocket without paying for them, the court was told.

The total value of the stolen items was $100.80.

Mackie pleaded guilty to one charge of stealing.

His solicitor Lee Quinn, of Hannay Lawyers, said his client runs a successful building company which employs 10 people.

“Your honour, I’ve spoken to my client. There’s no excuse for what he did,” Mr Quinn said.

“He has repaid Bunnings. He contacted Bunnings and made payment to them.

“That store, however, has issued him with a prohibition notice which means he can’t go to that store.”

Mr Quinn said Mackie’s company spent about $2000 per week with the hardware company through a trade account.

“My client takes home about $3000 a week, so obviously he had the means to pay for (the items),” he said.

“He makes no excuse other than he’s sorry for his actions.”

Magistrate Janice Crawford ordered Mackie to pay a $250 fine.

A conviction was recorded.
