Gold Coast housing prices skyrocket

Billionaire developer “high-rise” Harry Triguboff has unveiled his next Gold Coast project – a giant twin supertower project for a prominent beachfront site just south of Main Beach.

Fresh off putting the finishing touches on the 76-storey Ocean tower in central Surfers Paradise, Mr Triguboff’s Meriton has filed plans with the Gold Coast City Council for Pacific, a $600m two-tower project of 71 and 51-storeys respectively on the Banyan Tree site on The Esplanade.

The towers will have 637 units with 382 in the larger tower and 255 in the smaller.

Designed by Surfers Paradise architectural firm DBI, Meriton say the towers will deliver a “landmark development” at a “gateway site”.

“(They will create) a residential-led mixed-use environment where stylish sculptural towers give way at ground level to a human scale form that is enhanced with layered landscaping through the street frontages and pedestrian plaza, feature landscape awnings and plantings within the podium form of the towers,” a report on the project reads.

The ground level will feature shops and restaurants while the towers will have a total of 926 carparks.

Mr Triguboff spent $75m to buy the Banyan Tree site in May.

The 88-year-old Meriton group founder told the Bulletin at the time he was excited to build in the suburb.

“I’m Surfers’ biggest fan – I love walking on the beach and I lap up the buzz,” he said.

“Surfers is entering a new era on the back of Covid, with more and more Australians appreciating it.

“Many of them are buying apartments and, of course, low interest rates are helping them.

“I’m not the only developer awake to what’s happening (in Surfers) – two whole city blocks, back from The Esplanade, have sold or been joint-ventured.”

The new towers will take the number Mr Triguboff has built on the Gold Coast since the early 1980s to 2021.
