Gold Coast development: Descon Group Australia’s ‘Super super tower’ plans for Surfers site

A young construction industry go-getter is out to reach for the sky on the Gold Coast – with a super super-tower of 118 levels and a second unusual tower nearby. WHAT WE KNOW

A YOUNG construction industry go-getter is out to reach for the sky on the Gold Coast – with a super super-tower of 118 levels.

Danny Isaac, 34, and building arm Descon Group Australia are spending $35m to buy a Surfers Paradise site already earmarked for the nation’s tallest tower at 103 floors.

Mr Isaac, whose group turns over what he terms “hundreds of millions of dollars a year”, plans to add another 15 floors.

The move would take the building to more than 370 metres, providing the highest apartment living in the southern hemisphere.

The nation’s tallest apartment tower is Melbourne’s Australia 108 at 319 metres.

Mr Isaac yesterday said his project would include a second tower, would have an end value of $3bn and would be aimed at international investors.

The Isaac group is buying a 5278sq m site which fronts the Gold Coast Highway and Markwell Ave.

The Chinese owners had it approved five years ago for a project called Orion Towers and with the 103-level tower and a 76-floor one.

Mr Isaac said he was making an immediate start on modifying that approval and would start construction “ASAP”.

The Sydney-born businessman said he started work “very young – at 13 or 14”.

He has focused on structural work and has been described as one of Australia’s kings of concrete.

Mr Isaac added development to his repertoire last year and has a debut Gold Coast project involving 60 units under way in Southport.

Descon is also promoting a second unusual tower project, at 3321 Surfers Paradise Bvd, currently the site of the ageing Surf n Sun backpacker hostel.

The company’s website this week published photos of a striking tower, made up of five and offset smaller towers stacked on top of each other.

That project is set to include 120 apartments, including two penthouses and six sub-penthouses.

The deal on the land is yet to settle after going under contract for an undisclosed sum in October.

Mr Isaac said his group worked along the eastern seaboard and had offices in three states, with his Adcon division having structure and engineering arms.

“Adcon has the latest technology in structure systems, which allows builder Descon to keep a competitive edge in an inflated market.”

Mr Isaac said Adcon’s contracts included work on Melbourne’s Metro tunnel.

Descon’s $35m Surfers buy is from Orion International Group which bought what was known as the Thrifty site for $25m in 2016.

Orion put it on the market in August via Bob and Russell Rollington, of First National Surfers Paradise, and Brad Merkur, of the Bourke agency.

Mr Merkur yesterday said Mr Isaac was not the only contender for the Orion parcel.

“There was a backup buyer who wanted to undertake due diligence, whereas the Isaac offer was quick and straight.”
