A Broadbeach Waters resident has reached breaking point after two years of ‘no fear’ crooks targeting her home. Watch the video

Gold Coast suburb's shocking crime spree

A Broadbeach Waters resident says she’s been victim to a “crazy” two-year crime spree that started with a frightening carjacking attempt.

Liana Taylor says she’s “spent thousands on security, a rottweiler dog” and admits “I can’t do much more”.

“Yet the criminals are breaking in while I am home at 2pm.

“They do it with no fear due to no arrests, prosecutions or convictions.

“We need to step up somehow and do something about underaged, over-protected criminals.”

Ms Taylor said crime in her street, which the Bulletin has decided not to reveal, had become more frequent since a baseball bat-wielding man tried to carjack her in the driveway of her home.

In a 20-minute attack in Broadbeach in December 2019, three men robbed a woman of her mobile phone and handbag and tried to steal Ms Taylor’s Porsche. They demanded the keys, but she fought back and drive away.

The men eventually stole a man’s BMW.

Ms Taylor has reported a spate of break-ins and attempted break-ins since then.

According to Queensland Police crime data, more than 16,000 thefts have been recorded on the Gold Coast in the past year.

The worst suburbs for theft were Southport (1793 offences) and Surfers Paradise (1481 offences).

In her latest brush with thugs, Ms Taylor’s security camera caught crooks climbing the fence of her home at 2pm on March 25.

She said it took police more than two hours to get to her house.

“They’re understaffed and they can’t protect us anymore,” the Broadbeach Waters woman said.

“The system is broken and it needs to be fixed.”

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said officers attended the address at 5.24pm because they had responded to a number of high-priority domestic violence incidents beforehand.

“Due to the nature of policing, calls for service must be triaged based on the threat to life and safety,” she said.

“The Queensland Police Service is committed to keeping the people of the Gold Coast safe and will always ensure a strong police presence in Broadbeach Waters.

“Officers regularly conduct high-visibility patrols of the Broadbeach Waters area and have a number of proactive operations aimed at preventing property crime including Street C.R.E.D, Luminous and Journey.”
