A witness to the aftermath of a fatal car crash’s “smoking wreckage” has described the gut-wrenching arrival on the scene of the teen victims parents.
An 18-year-old was killed after slamming his car into a tree on Somerset Drive at Mudgeeraba at 9:15pm on Saturday.
A Mudgeeraba resident among the first there described the chaotic scene: “There was a massive bang and I ran out onto the road and saw the smoking wreckage,” she said.
“There was blood all over the front seat and the two male passengers climbed out of the car and were in complete shock. They sat on the median strip dazed and confused,” she said.
“The car was fully wrapped around the tree and there was a loud whirring as the boy’s foot was still on the accelerator.
“I ran inside and called the ambulance and the driver was still alive at that stage.”
The woman said when she went back inside she heard a woman drive up to the scene screaming.
“She was just yelling no, no, no over and over again. I assume it was the boy’s mother. The one who died,” she said.
The woman said as she was sweeping up windshield glass at the scene on Sunday morning, a man turned up with flowers.
“I asked him if he knew the boy and he broke down and said it was his son,” she said.
The woman said she had witnessed eight or nine crashes at the same spot “just metres” from her front door.
“We’ve had cars flip right outside our driveway and we even had a person crash through our fence,” she said.
“The amount of crashes along this road has gotten so bad we asked LNP State MP Ros Bates to install a guardrail. Thankfully she has.”
A 17-year-old male passenger in the car was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
Another 17-year-old passenger assessed by paramedics was uninjured.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and police urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage to come forward.
